Spiced Lamb Burgers

Spiced lamb burgers are the perfect dinner option for a busy day when you want something quick, nourishing and tasty. They’re a great healthy option which features one of my favorite meats that I only recently started cooking with. If you’ve never cooked with lamb before, I definitely recommend starting by trying a recipe like this! The burgers are also paleo and Whole30 approved.

Spiced Lamb Burger Ingredients

Ground Lamb: Ground lamb is one of my favorite meats to use for burgers, lettuce wraps, etc. because its so moist and flavorful. If you haven’t cooked with lamb before (I hadn’t until very recently!) you should definitely try out a recipe like this first because it’s so simple and tasty.

Spices: The spices in the lamb burgers are very important, aka why they are called spiced lamb burgers! You’ll need salt, black pepper, cumin, coriander and oregano. If you like spicy food you could also add some cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes too. Feel free to adjust for more salt to taste.

Lemon: Adding a bit of lemon zest to the burgers adds a bit of acidity and compliments the flavor of the spices in the burgers. If you’d prefer to leave it out you can, but I recommend try it out! I often do this with meatballs as well.

Avocado Oil: The avocado oil is used for cooking the burgers. I always use avocado oil because it’s a neutral oil that has a very high smoke point, but you can use any neutral oil you prefer like olive oil.

Butter Lettuce: I like to serve these lamb burgers in lettuce wraps because they taste very crisp and pair well with the burgers. You can also use regular buns or even just serve the burgers alone or on top of a salad. Butter lettuce is my personal favorite!

Toppings: You can use whatever toppings you like for the lamb burgers. My favorite toppings for these ones are feta, pickles and tomatoes. Other great toppings are dill or pickled onions.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground lamb, 85% lean

  • zest of 1/2 lemon

  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil

  • 8 butter or romaine lettuce leaves (or burger buns)

  • sliced tomato, pickled red onion, pickles, crumbled feta cheese, diced tomatoes, for serving (optional)

Directions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground lamb, lemon zest, coriander, cumin, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Use clean hands to fully incorporate the spices into the lamb.
  • Using a large cookie scoop or clean hands, form the lamb into four even flattened circles and set aside.
  • Heat the avocado oil on a large skillet over medium-high heat, then carefully add each of the lamb burgers (cook in batches if needed).
  • Cook the burgers for about five minutes, then flip to cook the other side for another 5 to 8 minutes. Use a meat thermometer to monitor the internal temperature and remove them from the skillet when the internal temperature reaches 160F.
  • Immediately place the cooked lamb burgers into the lettuce wraps or buns and top with toppings of choice.

Notes

  • Storage: Refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 3 days.
  • Grilling: If accessible, grill the burgers until an internal temperature of 160F, about 5 to 8 minutes per side.
